PHOTO: Vanessa Andrea V\u00e5gst\u00f8l Hilland \/ Forsvaret<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>More than 35,000 people<\/strong> had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsinenglish.no\/2026\/08\/30\/tributes-mount-for-a-cherished-monarch-as-norways-new-king-carries-on\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">viewed King Harald\u2019s casket<\/a> by Tuesday afternoon, most all of them waiting in line for as long as seven hours. \u201cThat alone says something about our society,\u201d Laura Maria Sch\u00fctze, a Danish researcher specializing in royal funerals, told newspaper <em>Aftenposten<\/em>. Even though traditions have become vulnerable in the digital age, Sch\u00fctze stressed how rituals around major events can help people feel they\u2019re part of them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat can function like glue in society,\u201d Sch\u00fctze said. Many standing in line, or emerging from the chapel, agreed. \u201cFor me, this is a major Norwegian historical event,\u201d Elisabeth Hoddevik, age 47, told <em>Aftenposten<\/em> after she\u2019d already been standing in line for an hour.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted to experience the mood, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsinenglish.no\/2026\/09\/01\/king-haakon-viii-sworn-in-as-support-for-norways-monarchy-rises-again\/\">I like our monarchy as an institution<\/a>,\u201d Hoddevik added. \u201cOur <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsinenglish.no\/2026\/08\/28\/harald-v-1937-2026-unifier-comforter-and-the-peoples-king\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">King Harald was an outstanding monarch.<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Many of the mounds of flowers and written tributes<\/strong> to King Harald that had piled up outside the palace since he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsinenglish.no\/2026\/08\/28\/norway-in-mourning-for-king-harald-v\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">died on August 28<\/a> had been removed before the funeral procession got underway. Norwegians had started <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsinenglish.no\/2026\/08\/28\/norwegians-mount-spontaneous-show-of-support-for-their-ailing-king\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">placing bouquets and other tokens of their affection<\/a> on the palace grounds when the king was still in hospital and his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsinenglish.no\/2026\/08\/24\/a-nation-wishes-its-monarch-well\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">condition had worsened<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_177410\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-177410\"><a class=\"td-modal-image\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newsinenglish.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_8103-scaled-e1788944171354.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-177410 td-animation-stack-type0-2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsinenglish.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_8103-scaled-e1788944171354.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-177410\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Norwegians expressed first their best wishes for the king, and then their sorrow through mounds of flowers and written greetings. Following them was the late King Harald\u2019s widow, the 89-year-old Queen Sonja, and Haakon\u2019s wife, the new Queen Mette-Marit, both of them riding in a slow-moving royal limousine. Kings, queens, princes and princesses had arrived in Oslo from all over Europe, plus Japan, Jordan and several other countries, and they were followed by Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr St\u00f8re, the Parliament\u2019s President Masud Gharahkhani and the chief justice of Norway\u2019s Supreme Court, Toril Marie \u00d8ie.<\/p>\n<p>They were in turn followed by other visiting heads of state, government ministers, supreme court justices, the leader of the Sami Parliament, the governor of Svalbard, Oslo Mayor Anne Lindboe and Defense Chief Eirik Kristoffersen among other dignitaries.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_177601\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-177601\"><a class=\"td-modal-image\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newsinenglish.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/55517676973_cc6b143b64_c-e1788962032627.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-177601 td-animation-stack-type0-2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsinenglish.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/55517676973_cc6b143b64_c-e1788962032627.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-177601\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Here are Prince William of Great Britain and his aunt, Princess Anne, representing the UK at King Harald\u2019s funeral on Wednesday. PHOTO: Martin Siewartz Nielsen \/ Kunnskapsdepartementet<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>The solemn procession<\/strong> on Wednesday also included Prince William of Great Britain and his aunt, Princess Anne, who is one of King Haakon VIII\u2019s godmothers. There\u2019s a long-standing tie between the Norwegian and British royal families, since Norway\u2019s first modern king, Haakon VII, had been a Danish prince who was married to one of Queen Victoria\u2019s granddaughters, who became Queen Maud of Norway. She continued to spend much of her time back home in England, and died at a relatively early age in 1938. She was the late King Harald\u2019s grandmother.<\/p>\n<p>The king\u2019s funeral was also attended by members of the Norwegian government, the state\u2019s representatives around the country and as many others as the Oslo Cathedral could hold. The hour-long ceremony was full of music, poetry and even a gospel choir that illustrated the diversity and inclusion that King Harald had hailed during his 35-year reign.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More than 3,000 military personnel<\/strong> in dress uniform has lined the streets from the palace to the cathedral and on to the Akershus Fortress and Castle, where a private ceremony was held for the family before King Harald\u2019s casket will be placed in a sarcophagus in the royal mausoleum under Akershus\u2019 chapel.<\/p>\n<p>From there it was back to the palace for a reception at the Royal Palace. All flags were raised back to full mast amidst canon salutes, ringing church bells around the country and a \u201cmissing man\u201d formation by fighter jets over Oslo. The royal family and palace staff will, however, remain in mourning for King Harald for another month.
